Interview
Janna Kumi is a former forestry executive turned colored pencil artist. She rediscovered art after a stroke rearranged her priorities. Inspired by the textures of British Columbia tree bark, and armed with a childhood set of Laurentian pencils she had abandoned for fifty years, she creates richly layered works on paper, cradled wood panels, and sometimes canvas that celebrate the quiet geometry of the natural world.
Tutorial
Her tutorial is not the typical tutorial. Rather than show step-by-step how she creates her beautiful and unique artwork, she shares her creative process from preparing the cradled wood panel to sealing the finished artwork with cold wax.
If this tutorial offers anything, Janna hopes it’s the reminder that an artist’s work grows from both sides of the practice: understanding your materials deeply, and trusting the quiet soul of the subject as it unfolds.
It’s a fascinating process for all artists, but especially for those who may want to create artwork that doesn’t need to be framed under glass.
