Featured Artist: Janette Carmichael
Janette Carmichael loves art and loves animals, so it’s no surprise that she has found ways to combine her two loves. Whether she’s drawing pets, wildlife or fish, her work is full of life and character. She discusses her work as an artist and what got her started with colored pencils in the first place.
Her tutorial is a “first” for CP Magic! as she shows you how to draw a Neon Tetra fish. She demonstrates how to use only 14 colors on watercolor paper in fun and easy-to-follow steps. It’s a great weekend project.

Personal Art Challenges
What exactly is a personal art challenge, and why are we talking about them this month? Carrie explains what they are and how they’ve helped her advance her drawing skills. She then asks you to consider how you might benefit from your own personal art challenge.
Getting Past the Ugliness in the Drawing Process
Have you ever noticed that it doesn’t matter what you’re drawing, you seem to reach a point when your work looks ugly? If you’ve ever been frustrated by this, you’re not alone. Carrie explains why this happens so often and how to get past it.
Common Colored Pencil Problems
These aren’t the kinds of problems we usually think about when we think about problems with colored pencil. Carrie talks about things like estimating the amount of time a drawing may take and similar situations that can cause frustration.
