More About the Hay Bale Study Tutorial

“A study is a quick drawing, usually focusing on one part of a subject and using value and/or color to explore the subject.

“Studies are often drawn outside or from life and without spending a lot of time. But studies can be an excellent way to improve drawing skills without the stress of producing finished work.” — Carrie L. Lewis

For centuries, artists have explored their favorite subjects by drawing or painting studies of them. Drawing studies seems to be something many colored pencil artists have forgotten. Or never learned. Carrie hopes to change that trend with this tutorial.

The tutorial begins with Carrie showing how she developed the best reference photo for the drawing and then improved on her original line drawing and design. You’ll see how she then used only ten colors to draw this beautiful study of a hay bale.

Carrie also demonstrates her favorite drawing method by showing you how to glaze color over an umber under drawing for natural looking green colors.

The drawing is on white Clairefontaine Pastelmat using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils, but you can successfully complete this tutorial with any artist grade pencils on good drawing paper.
