Studio News for February 2024

It’s time to talk about the studio news for February 2024. Let’s get right to it.

Studio News for February 2024

Special News

The second Jelly Bean class based on the drawing, Spring Storm, was on February 3. I have to confess that I have mixed feelings about it. I learned a lot from doing it, (mostly what not to do!), but I also learned what works. Thank you to all the students who signed up for this class, whether you attended live or watched later by video.

CP Magic! News

The March issue brings us back to the regular format of featured artist, interview, tutorial, articles and the reader gallery.

Canadian artist Kim Vlahovich is the featured artist. His subjects vary from his grandchildren to the playground structures they play on, and his art experience is just as varied.

His tutorial is a bit outside the norm for CP Magic, but it’s full of color, shining highlights, and fun. I think you’ll have a lot of fun with it, and where else can you get a complete, step-by-step tutorial for $3.99?

Current Works in Progress

Do you remember the mountain landscape I mentioned in last month’s studio news report? I’d hoped to finish it in January but had to report that I missed that goal?

I finished this piece early in February. That means it took about four weeks less than three years to complete. No, I wasn’t working on it all that time. The fact is that I lost it for about eighteen months! How is that possible? Easy, when you put things away for safe keeping and forget where you put them!

I’m very happy with the results and glad to have another, long-term piece finished.

I also finished the 2020 drawing Spring Storm again. That is, I finished making final adjustments on it early this month. This one doesn’t count against the list of finished pieces for this year because I didn’t intend to do anymore work on it prior to the first Jelly Bean class for Ann Kullberg. I used it as a sample for that class and the following one, and then decided to make a few more adjustments. It is now finished. Again.

The dog portrait I’ve spoken about the last couple of months is finally off the work-in-progress wall and in the review stage. Hopefully I’ll be revealing it soon.

Looking to the Future

The immediate future features the third Jelly Bean Class for Ann Kullberg, once again based on Spring Storm. That happens March 9, 2024.

After that, I’ll be back to working my way through my own projects. House Lion needs to be finished, and so does a horse drawing on dark brown Canson Mi-Teintes.

I’m also working out ideas about an ACEO group of some sort. I asked newsletter readers to share their ideas on such a group, what we might cover, how it might be conducted, and other ideas. Everyone had wonderful ideas and I’m hoping to have official news by the first of April.

If you have an idea on doing ACEOs and/or participating in an ACEO group or class of some kind, I’d enjoy hearing them. Post your ideas in the comment section below.

Hi Carrie, I like the idea of an ACEO group because miniature drawings intrigue me. I don’t know enough about how these groups work to give much in the way of a suggestion, except I hope they can be simple projects I can work between class assignments and be able to pick my own subject and medium perhaps?
