More About this Issue

Four pet portrait artists—Geraldine Buckley, Brenda Eneboe, Peggy Osborne and Jeff Tresidder—talked with Carrie about their work as portrait artists. They discussed such things as the challenges and joys of being a portrait artist, special tools and techniques, and favorite papers and pencils. Links to artist websites and/or social media accounts are provided when available, so you can dig even deeper or connect personally with the artists.

Each artist also offered wise advice to any artist thinking about getting into commission work, whether with pets or other subjects.

Artists also shared some of their best work, along with comments about the special challenges each portrait presented or other thoughts.

Featured Tutorial

Peggy Osborne

This issue wouldn’t be complete without a tutorial, and Peggy Osborne was kind enough to provide a great one. What is her subject? A horse’s eye in up-close-and-personal focus. You can even see the reflections of what the horse sees in this beautiful, small-format piece.

Peggy provides insights on her choice of subject along with detailed step-by-step instructions.

She used Prismacolor pencils on brown Pastelmat paper, but you can successfully complete this study on almost any paper and with most brands of colored pencils.
