Original colored pencil on medium gray mat board
I was born and raised in the middle of lower Michigan, a scenic and beautiful place if ever there was one. I enjoyed seeing the effects of each season and often daily changes in the weather on the local landscapes, but was rarely moved to paint them.
Then I moved to south central Kansas and became acquainted with the Flint Hills.
If you are of the opinion that Kansas is flat and treeless, then you need to see the Flint Hills. Often flat-topped hills rising suddenly and sharply out of the landscape. Vivid contrasts of light and value. Cattle on the open range during the grazing season. The drama of spring burns and violent summer storms.
Some will say that the Flint Hills are stark and those people are right. But the Flint Hills are also beautiful and something in them has moved me to begin experimently with landscape painting in both colored pencil and oils.
"West of Bazaar" marks my entrance into serious painting of the Flint Hills region of Kansas using colored pencils. This rainy intersection is just west of Bazaar, Kansas along US-177. My husband and I pass through this area frequently on our driving trips through this part of God's Country. I first encountered it in the spring of 2003, my first full year in Kansas. This image has often captured my attention in passing the same intersection countless times since. The area is wonderful and full of character at any time of year and in any type of light.
