Clever Trevor was a very good three-year-old. In fact, he was one of the best three-year-olds to come out of Oklahoma in a long time.
He won many races handily. He won the Inaugeral running of the Remington Park Derby at Remington Park in Oklahoma City, near his home training stable. In fact, that handy victory and his subsequent appearance on the cover of a national sporting magazine is what first attracted my attention.
He had only one difficulty ... he was born the same year as Sunday Silence and Easy Goer. We all know Sunday Silence trounced Easy Goer in the 1989 Kentucky Derby. Do we remember that Clever Trevor led the early stages of the Kentucky Derby? I do!
This portrait of Clever Trevor is created from photographs provided to me by his trainer that summer. Although I had hoped to do a racing portrait of Clever Trevor, that never happened. Instead, this very special head study portrait was the result.
But it may not be the only one. Only a year or so ago, I had the opportunity to see Clever Trevor again, then 18 and living out his retirement at his trainer's barn. I also had the opportunity to take some photographs of my own and although he wasn't very interested in running, he did strike some very nice poses for me. I am still in hopes of doing another portrait one of these days.
He is, after all, the only Kentucky Derby horse I have ever touched!
