As an artist, I tend to get so close to whatever I’m drawing that I lose sight of the big picture. Sometimes, I get so closely focused on each part that I forget there is a big picture.

Getting the Details Right Sometimes Requires Stepping Back Far Enough to See the Big Picture

But no matter how good, the best drawn details serve no purpose without the overarching framework. The context of the subject. The Big Picture.

How do you recapture the vision for your art?

One of the things I like to do is go for a walk. It doesn’t need to be a long walk. I live in town and sometimes go no further than around the block. Sometimes a mile.

Sometimes recapturing the vision takes nothing more dramatic than stepping outside to check on the potted plants or the neighborhood cats. Or just to take a deep breath.
