Although I’ve always seemed to live in beautiful places—or have been able to see beauty in all places—drawing landscapes never appealed to me. I was just too busy drawing horses.

Then, in 2001, I saw the Flint Hills of Kansas for the first time and everything changed. Even under a mantle of brown December grass and a skim of snow, there was something magnetic about the landscape. For the first time in nearly 40 years of being an artist, I found myself thinking, “Maybe I should do more landscapes.”

That was the beginning of a journey that continues to this day, whether I’m using my camera or colored pencils.
