Making a Horse Painting

People often ask how long it takes to do a painting.

I think most artists get this type of question and the answers can be as varied as the artists. It has been my observation that most people who are not artistic have no concept of exactly how much time goes into the making of a painting and how much of that time is not actually painting.

Sometimes, they also ask how I make a painting. While most are not interested in every little detail of the process, a brief step-by-step description of the process is enlightening. Most private portrait customers love to see how I get their horse onto a canvas or a piece of paper.

So why not share that process with all of you, as well?

No reason that I could think of.

This is a portrait of Admiral's Express. Admiral's Express is the wealthiest horse whose portrait I have painted to date. I have painted his portrait twice; one portrait for each of the couples who own him.

I was never able to see Admiral's Express race, but did get to see him where he lives at his trainer's farm. He was a great subject to paint both times. This is the second of the two portraits.
