And quite possibly the fastest. With a current lifetime speed mark at under 1 minute and 49 seconds for a mile, he is, at any rate, the fastest pacing horse I have been fortunate enough to paint.
But I have yet to see him race in person. He spends his racing days in Ontario, Canada, racing at Woodbine or Mohawk and occasionally, in the United States. I spend my days in Kansas, where harness racing is no longer available except on special occasions.
In preparation for this portrait, however, my husband and I had the great pleasure of driving up to the training farm and meeting Admiral's Express and trainer Mike Hales in person. What a great experience that was, even though it rained heavily from Port Huron, Michigan to Toronto and the traffic was frightful on that portion of the trip. There was good, if somewhat flat light, at the farm and Admiral's Express cooperated perfectly, giving me lots of good shots, including some very casual interactions with a sand pit.
This portrait is the result, combining a win photo with one of the many good head study photographs I took at the farm.
I would still love to see The Grey Gladiator in action, but I thoroughly enjoy following his career and reading all about his continuing exploits.
A second commissioned portrait of Admiral's Express is currently in progress.
