Michigan Harness Racing Horses

Adios Indian

14" x 18" Oil on Stretched Canvas
2001 MHHA Auction Purchase

Adios Indian's portrait was a special one. His story is familiar to only a few these days, most notably his owners and a few diehard harness racing fans. He raced in the 1960s and earned enough in winnings to pay for the farm he eventually retired to. The remarkable thing about his career is that for most of it, he was legally blind.

In those days, he was allowed to race after his owners, who also happened to be his trainer and driver and handlers, proved he was reliable on the track. He was never involved in an accident and never caused an accident on the track. He raced at several different tracks, including in Canada, and survived his racing career in good shape and retired as a good race horse with good earnings for the time.

Throughout his racing career and into retirement, his constant companion was a goat, who served as his eyes as well as his companion. They lived in the same stall. They lounged in the same pastures. They were inseparable.

Because he was blind, Adios Indian often made close contact with other horses to identify them. In the end, it was this aspect of his blindness that cost his life. Another horse kicked out at him and happened to strike one of his front legs. The leg was broken and there was only one option available for the gallant racer. He is buried on the farm he earned and where he lived out his post racing days.
