The seven paintings shown below are in the under painting stage. I generally do not paint skies with an under painting unless there is weather or some other special look I am after. Quite often, as is the case here, I paint the skies first, then paint the landscape when the sky is dry.

With these seven, the skies were all painted with a palette knife and left deliberately textured. This is definitely not my usual technique and while it’s fun to paint with something other than a brush, I’m not sure the palette knife is the right thing for an aceo landscape painting. Perhaps if I had a smaller palette knife….

The landscapes were all painted from the same reference photo. The first one looks the most like the actual scene. Each painting afterward looks less and less like that original scene. It is interesting to see how they changed from painting to painting, especially since I did one after the other.

The next step will be to tweak the under painting. The first two or three will not need much tweaking, but the last couple are nearly vacant and will be seeing some additional work.

The under paintings were allowed to dry, then I glazed color over them the following week.

The images below are paired with the first and second (final) stage of each together.

It is an interesting and much more satisfactory technique, even for paintings this size. I am looking forward to using it for future works.
