This original oil painting is one of two paintings based on the same reference photograph. The horse in the photograph was a white percheron, grazing contentedly in a bright, sunny pasture. It was a great photograph and begged to be turned into a painting.

Like a lot of artists, weather holds a special fascination for me. All kinds of weather.

Some time ago, when I couldn't decide what to paint, I dug out the photograph of this white percheron and put him in a field during a snow fall and called it Snow Study.

I also put him in a field on a rainy day. Same basic composition, but the horse was moved a little bit to the right in one of the paintings and was a little bit smaller in the other one. Both paintings were experimental in that the only reference I had was the photograph of the horse and my imagination for the backgrounds and the weather. I don't recall that I put a lot of time into drawing the horse, either, which is usually just as painstaking a part of the process as painting is.

Everything must have worked because I sold "Rain Study" and my sister has "Snow Study".
