Admiral's Express 2

Choosing Reference Photos

In July 2004, Neal and I had the opportunity to travel to Ontario, Canada
to visit and photograph Admiral's Express. The result was nearly an hour of video and at least three rolls of print photographs.

Those photographs were used for both portraits.

Since the second portrait was to be designed similarly to the first one,
many photographs were automatically ruled out. But I still needed to select a good head study photo to accompany the new racing image which was supplied by the client.

Those head shots were then paired with the racing image. To further demonstrate the full range of options, I used a different background for
each one. These compositional designs were then presented to the client.

The client reviewed these ideas for a few days, then let me know that
Design one and four were preferred, but with darker backgrounds.
No specific colors were chosen, so I went back to PhotoShop and changed the background colors on these two designs.

The client also requested that I paint Admiral's mane into the painting. I substituted a head shot showing mane to show how that could be done.

The client eventually selected Design #4 with the original head shot and a dark brown background.

The next step is the drawing.
