This small (8x10) painting on masonite was painted as a study for a larger painting. The goal of this study was to place the details of Firestorm's head for a larger, full body painting I hoped to complete. In spite of the study work and many in-progress changes, that full body has yet to be painted, but this study is a wonderful sample of small portraits in oil.
Even though this piece is a small painting and meant as a study, I used a process based on the methods of Johannes Vermeer. In this process, a detailed underpainting is developed first, followed by transparent glazes of color. Even for study work, it has proven to be a very productive method.
