On this final day of 2009, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has encouraged me in my work as a painter. Clients, customers, fellow artists, friends and, of course, family.
Sales of original artwork and portraits are always encouraging. That is, after all, how so many artists determine whether or not they [...]

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out [...]

The studio year is rapidly winding down. In my final days for 2009, I’m working on two portraits.
I’m still working on the background for Lockkeeper. I have to say after today’s work that it’s more a matter of holding ground than gaining territory. I repainted the sky to lighten it and added a few clouds, [...]

Today’s 90-minute session began and ended with the blue halter, but also encompassed parts of the bridle, hardware on both and all of the horse to the right of the tack as color work continued.
I didn’t intend to spend a lot of time on this painting today as there were other things I should have [...]

Two small landscape paintings were completed today.
The Spot, shown here, is a 6×8 inch landscape painted on Raymar canvas panel.
This painting is pulled entirely from the imagination and was a lot of fun to work with. I used the classical painting methods.
A step-by-step demonstration of this small format painting is available on the Demonstration Page.
Morning [...]

This has been a good week and a good month for painting so far. Two client approvals were received over the weekend just past, which meant one drawing was ready to enter the painting process (Clyde) and one portrait (Keyodee Star) was approved at the dead layer phase. Good news on both.
Keyodee Star is now [...]

The portrait of Lockkeeper entered the home stretch today with the beginning of color work.
I started with a rather ambitious daily goal: do the first color glaze over the entire painting.
I even thought about what I would do. A glaze of mixed green over grass and trees. A glaze of mixed earth tones over the [...]

I woke up to snow today. Still a little bit of snow drifting down and about an inch of snow already on the ground. We’re under winter storm warnings through most of Kansas, so winter is here even though the calendar says winter is still two weeks away.
I took this picture at 6:30 a.m. today. [...]

Ah. The last month of the year already. Where did all that time go?
I’m seeing Christmas decorations going up all over town, so I’m including a Christmas shot here, too.
Because most of the decorations I see are white lights (come on, People! Where’s your imagination!), I’m posting a colorful tree! Color is great!

In the Studio
Studio work this month was limited to portrait work and the two portraits that are already in the painting stages.
Lockkeeper was finished at the dead layer and will be ready to enter color work on December 10.
Keyodee Star is almost finished at the dead layer. I have been working through that painting one [...]
