Contemplation and Afternoon Graze: Imprimatura

Carrie L. Lewis | February 28, 2009

Contemplation (right) and Afternoon Graze (below) are now at the imprimatura stage.
With this technique, the imprimatura stage is not the first painting stage. It’s the final prep stage. The painting surface is being toned in preparation for painting, but it is toned after the drawing is in place instead of before.
I used two base colors [...]

Contemplation and Afternoon Graze: Inking in the Drawing

Carrie L. Lewis | February 26, 2009

Contemplation, shown at right, and Afternoon Graze, below, are now each in the inking in stage.
In each case, I moved quickly from transferring the drawing onto the panel to finishing the drawing with a 2B pencil to inking the drawing in on the panel.
The only break was for photography and, with Afternoon Graze, waiting until [...]

A New Branch in the Business Tree

Carrie L. Lewis | February 25, 2009

As of Monday, February 23, 2009, I took on yet another new role.
I became a columnist.
Until further notice, I will be writing a once-a-month column for the local paper, the Newton Kansan, on behalf of the Carriage Factory Gallery. The first of those columns appeared this week and, should you be interested, you can read [...]

Contemplation and Afternoon Graze: Drawing

Carrie L. Lewis | February 24, 2009

Two paintings are now officially in progress using the Flemish technique. Contemplation, shown at right, and Afternoon Graze, below, were started on Monday, February 23 and Tuesday, February 24 respectively.
They are each on a 9×12 masonite panel prepared with at least two coats of 50% acrylic gesso an 50% modeling paste applied and smoothed with [...]

Changes in Direction … Slightly

Carrie L. Lewis | February 21, 2009

Most of my good horse painting friends and my non-painting friends are going to be quite surprised to see the collection of work I’m hoping to put together as lesson work.
This lovely rose is scheduled as one of the first subjects, for example. I can’t remember ever having painted a floral of any kind before, [...]

The Journey Begins….

Carrie L. Lewis | February 21, 2009

Course supplies for the Flemish paintings technique I am studying arrived on my doorstep this week. Christmas revisited!
I unpacked and inventoried replacement tubes of paint and some new colors; a pint of acrylic gesso, with which I am very familiar, and a pint of acrylic modeling paste, which is new to my painting tool kit.
A [...]

Classical Painting Blog

Carrie L. Lewis | February 19, 2009

On Tuesday, February 17, I launched a new blog.
Classical Paintings will focus on the work I will be doing with the Flemish painting technique. It will feature news and updates on the trials and errors of learning something new.
It will also feature gallery pages to showcase paintings as they are finished.
It will also be very [...]

New Paintings in the Classical Style

Carrie L. Lewis | February 17, 2009

In 2004, I was introduced to the work of Alexei Antonov, who paints in the style of the Flemish Masters and who was providing online lessons and workshops. I tried one painting in that style and it turned out very well. The color was gorgeous and I had never before created a painting with that [...]

Horses in Landscape, Part 5: Decisions

Carrie L. Lewis | February 14, 2009

Dinner with Friends
30″ x 24″
Oil on Masonite
February 9 & 10, 2009
This process is one of two places in the painting process where I find the computer to be an excellent painting tool, the first being the work that was done in creating the drawings in the first place.
I wanted to explore not only the arrangement [...]

Horses in Landscape, Part 5 continued

Dinner with Friends
30″ x 24″
Oil on Masonite
February 7, 2009
Today I worked on the second horse.
Rather than draw it on the same grid I used yesterday, I decided to use the second grid. Having two separate drawings will allow me to move them around relative to each other. There may be a more pleasing way to [...]
