ACEO Landscape Painting A Day

ACEO Landscape Paintings
by Carrie L. Lewis

Week 17, 2007

I made a decision on Monday that determined how the rest of the week and, possibly the rest of the challenge, will go. I decided to challenge myself even further by looking for more complex and intricate landscapes to paint.

I also decided to go back home, so to speak. I have been painting the Flint Hills almost exclusively for some weeks, so I turned back to Michigan.

The first step was to go through some of albums of the dairy farm and select a dozen or more images that were outside my comfort zone for painting. I ended up with a great selection of wooded landscapes, marshy landscapes, landscapes with cattle in them and even one that shows field work with wonderful lights and darks. It is my goal to do at least one painting of each one in the weeks to come.

This is the first week's worth of work. It is a mix of oils and acrylics. A challenge to do, yes. Fun and exhilerating? Most certainly!

I hope you enjoy this week's collection of original ACEO landscape paintings!

Landscape Study in Progress

This is the beginning stage of a more complicated composition. Today, all I was able to do was block in the shapes with basic color and design the composition. A good start!

Landscape Study in Progress Step Two

A little more work on this painting today. The basic shapes were enhanced with more detailed color and shapes. At this stage, it could be considered finished. But there is also a rainbow in the reference photo and I would like to include that in the painting. In order to do that, I will have to wait for the entire painting to dry completely, a process that could take a week or more.
