ACEO Landscape Painting A Day

ACEO Landscape Paintings

One new painting almost every day

In Honor of My Mom-in-Law

I didn't know my mom-in-law very long. Only a little over five years, as a matter-of-fact.

And yet, in some ways, it seemed like she had been part of my life forever.

Dorothy J. Lewis handled the good times and the bad times with equal grace and with unfailing faith. When her husband of 49 years died in 1995, her attitude was 'let's go forward'.

When she was told she had Parkinson's disease shortly thereafter, she did not give up.

When she was diagnosed with a recurrance of breast cancer for the third time in 1999, she wanted to see what was about the next turn in the road.

In fact, she set herself the goal of seeing her youngest grandson's sixth birthday. She not only reached that goal, she surpassed it. She was, in fact, able to celebrate his seventh birthday only a few months ago.

Dorothy suffered a stroke on Sunday, March 4 and concluded her life on earth on Tuesday, March 13. Her family celebrated her life and influence today in a service of song and memories.

I did not do an ACEO Landscape painting today. In fact, I did not do any artwork at all today. The painting shown above is an original painting Neal and I picked out for her when she first went into the hospital in January. I thought I would share it with you today in her honor.

Landscape Study #85 2007

And yet another oil painting over Yellow Ochre acrylic. I am having a lot of fun (and learning a lot!) about the ways different colors behave when applied over a toned surface.

So much fun, in fact, that part of my warm-up for the dayŐs work was toning another half dozen or so cards with Hansa Yellow. Hansa Yellow is a very high key, bright yellow, that should make for some very interesting images!

In the meantime, enjoy Landscape Study #85 2007, with itŐs bright light and billowing clouds.

Ripe Unto Harvest

It didn't seem reasonable to work with cards toned in Yellow Ochre and not paint a landscape featuring the golden tones of autumn.

Or ripe wheat.

So I did one of each tonight.

Landscape Study #83 features the Flint Hills covered with golden Tallgrass under a partly cloudy sky. It can be seen on the ACEO Landscape Extras page.

"Ripe Unto Harvest" is the second of the pair. It combines the deep, rich golds of wheat that is just about ready to harvest with the greens of summer foliage, all of it about to be overshadowed by building storm clouds.

Landscape Study #82 2007

This is another painting painted over a toned surface of Yellow Ochre acrylic. I used a very limited palette of Cerulean Blue, Titanium White, Hansa Yellow Medium and Sap Green to paint this landscape of the Flint Hills. It is one of two paintings using the same colors and technique and photographs taken very close to each other. The second ACEO Landscape can be seen on the ACEO Landscape Extras. Look for Landscape Study #81 2007.

I used Yellow Ochre quite a bit by letting it show through the layers of paint. The overall look is a very warm, unified appearance.

It doesn't hurt that those gold tones also look like bare dirt peeking through the grassy areas!

Landscape Study #80 2007
Evening Shadows

"Evening Shadows" is the beginning of an experiment in toned painting surfaces.

For some time, I have been painting on mat board cards sealed with acrylic paint, but have been using white paint. When I prepared the last batch of cards, I chose Yellow Ochre as the sealant. Since I paint directly on this sealed surface, that meant I would be painting on a toned surface, as well as a sealed one.

When I looked through photographs for something to paint this evening, I kept that golden underpainting in mind. The reference I chose showed a sun bathed, late afternoon pasture lined with trees. Most of the colors were warm and would work great with the Yellow Ochre tone, but the cool sky and the even cooler cast shadows were intriguing, as well.

I used Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Hansa Yellow and Titanium White to paint the greens and Sap Green and Ultramarine Blue for the deeper shadows. 3-1/2" x 2-1/2"

Landscape Study #79 2007
A Rainy Day in the Flint Hills

This is the second in a growing collection of pen & ink drawings. I have never thought I would enjoy pen & ink work, but being more or less forced to try it or do no artwork has opened my eyes.

I spend about the same amount of time on each pen & ink ACEO landscape as I spend on a painted landscape, but the feel is much more free. It's almost liberating to just begin sketching with a pen and keep working at the image until the landscape is complete.

Today's landscape is a variation on a theme for me. A long view of the Flint Hills showing cottonwoods lining a winding waterway. The clouds were planned but the falling rain was almost an afterthought.
