Landscape Study #69 2007

I liked the look of some of the passages of thin, transparent color so much in yesterday's ACEO Landscape that I decided to play with them a little bit more today. It has long been my habit to cover every square inch of surface with opaque paint that the notion of using such transparent glazes over underpaintings ... or even bare canvas ... is somewhat exhilarating.

The distant and middle ground hills were painted by applying paint, then wiping it off until I had just the right look.

I did some of that with the foreground, as well, but used more opaque passages to emphasize light and the shape and direction of grass.

The sky is acrylic with just a touch of oil in the clouds. The rest of the painting is oils over an acrylic underpainting of Burnt Sienna.

Landscape Study #68 2007

I learned something with today's ACEO landscape. Actually, I learned a couple of things.

One is the importance of discipline. It was not my best day today and by the time it was time to start thinking about the ACEO for today, the last thing I wanted to do was paint.

But I did and by the grace of God, this is the result.

The other thing I learned was the value of even the most basic sketch when it comes to design. I had sketched a few elements of this landscape onto the card a few days ago. Following that sketch tonight saved time and effort. It also solved another problem I've been having and that's getting clear color working wet-into-wet. By painting the drawn shapes, I did not have to over paint fresh paint.

So here is to this little painting, which was the vehicle for a couple of much needed lessons!

Landscape Study #67 2007

Believe it or not, the primary reference photo for this painting was taken along Camp Creek in the Flint Hills in late spring or early summer a few years ago. I don't remember exactly when it was taken, but sometime when everything was lush and green and Camp Creek had running water.

No, turning everything to a snowy landscape doesn't mean I can work miracles with paint and brush! But it does illustrate just how far artistic license can stretch!

Landscape Study #66 2007

A bright blue sky.

Bright white clouds.

Just a hint of distant hills through blades of waving tall grass.

Snow on the ground and possibly more on the way.

There are two days left of February, so there are two days left of my month of snow studies.
